Along the the Central and Mississippi Flyways that many Outdoor News Junior Pro Team members call home, as the snowline moves north, so do massive flocks of snow geese  pushing toward their breeding grounds on the Arctic Tundra. Waterfowlers can take advantage of this migration through the spring Light Goose Conservation Order. This conservation action is authorized to reduce an overabundance of snow geese that threatens the birds' arctic breeding habitat. There is some pretty cool history behind how this hunting opportunity came to be, that is covered in this blog read more....

BONUS TIP:
If you're going to try a spring hunt, here are a few suggestions:
Because snow geese are usually in huge flocks, big decoy spreads are recommended. While this is basically true, a bunch of stationary decoys are not enough. Kites with flapping wings – which means hunting on windy days, usually not a problem in spring – may bring birds close enough to shoot because they’re draw to motion. Rotary machines are an expensive investment, require a lot of time and effort to haul and set up, and don’t really seem to bring the geese any closer than flapping kites. Read more from Outdoor News on tips for hunting snow geese
KNOW YOUR BIRDS - don't shoot swans! While it's easier to identify the Blue Morph of the Lesser Snow Geese by their white face and dark body, there is habitat crossover with white swans that can be confused with snow geese. Check out this reference guide to ID your birds before you head out.

TIME TO TAP
Early spring means the sap is flowing in the hardwood trees, and it's time to tap some trees to make maple syrup.

But you don't need a whole forest. Did you ever think about tapping trees right in your own neighborhood?
A couple of JPT members asked permission to do just that! Watch them and learn in this VIDEO clip

And because it is just such a great guide to getting started, here is a video series we brought back to share with JPT members that walks you through how to do it!
