We are headed into the transition period for whitetail deer when their diet shifts as they start to prepare for winter.
Fall Food Sources = Good Scouting Locations Ahead of Your Hunt!

During the summer months, you can often spot deer browsing the edges of agricultural fields where they are feasting on tender soybean shoots and corn.
As the season eases into fall, it seems that of all available food sources, acorns are a top pick for deer. White oak acorns are preferred by deer because these acorns have less tannins than the other species of oaks.
  • White Oak trees have leaves with rounded tips and smooth edges - and the leaves don't have any tiny bristles.
  • Red Oak trees have leaves have pointed tips and at the end of each lobe you will see tiny bristle points.
  • (Keep reading below to find out what other animal loves acorns!)

  • Deer and other wildlife enjoy ripened fruit such as apples and pears. A variety of berries attract deer early on in the fall. If you spotted some pink wild roses blossoming during the summer months, look for the red "berries" on the plants. Those are the "rose hips" that are a sweet treat for deer as the weather cools down.

Topwater Time! Fall is the time to catch big numbers and big bass. While there are plenty of presentations out there that will trick both largemouths and smallies, the most fun you’ll have with either will involve topwater lures.
Three lure styles every fall angler should possess!
