This is the time of year when weather conditions can change fast! Some severe thunderstorms can produce hail larger than softballs or winds over 100 mph, so pay attention to the weather so you know when severe storms are possible. Check out this picture of some BIG hail stones that fell in Michigan recently - shared by a member of the Outdoor News team!
It is important to stay "sky aware" this time of year, and that you have a plan in place before severe weather strikes.
If the sky turns, and you are on a body of water, get off the lake as quickly and safely as possible.
Some severe thunderstorms can produce hail larger than softballs or winds over 100 mph, so please pay attention to the weather so you know when severe storms are possible. Thunderstorms also produce tornadoes and dangerous lightning; heavy rain can cause flash flooding.

Things like a battery operated weather radio are important if cell service goes down, but there are other important things such as SHOES. Yep -this will be very important if your home is damaged and you musk walk across broken glass or debris.
Make sure you have something to cover up with. Pillows, blankets, sleeping bags, can help to protect you from falling/flying debris. Grab a helmet - your bicycle, football or baseball helmet to protect your head and sunglasses to protect your eyes from flying debris.
If you are outside and severe weather happens, get as low to the ground as possible  - never under a tree - and try to protect your head, neck and upper body. Try to get to a low ditch and lie flat and cover up if you can to protect yourself from flying debris.
To help your get your safety plan resource kit started... During the month of May, two lucky JPT members in our weekly drawing will win a Medic Multi Tool and two will each win the Warrior Kid Medic Multi Tool Quick Draw from Warrior Kid Medic - the Triangular Bandage is the multitool of first aid gear.
Tick Season!  According to the CDC - the month of April saw nearly 100 emergency room visits for tick bites nationally, and they said that is the most for April since 2017. This map shows reported cases of tickborne diseases last summer. It is likely you live in one of these regions, so here are some reminders:
If a tick bites you, doctors say to remove it right away and wash the area with soap.
If you're in an area known for ticks such as grassy areas, protection with things like long sleeves and long pants can help prevent bites, and wearing tick repellants can help too.
It is important to check for ticks when you head home. If you are outside with your dog, make sure to check them too!

Gotta Love Open Water Season!

LET'S TALK TURKEY!
Learn more about the different types of turkey calls:
Pot-and-striker style friction calls: With this call you can produce clucks, yelps, cuts and purrs, simply by working a wooden striker against the surface of the call. It is different than traditional wooden box calls. Another option is the diaphragm mouth call. BUT WHAT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOU?
The trail cams were set out to research wolves, but they got a big surprise! The Voyageurs Wolf Project captured hours of high-quality video footage on March 25 of a female cougar with three large kittens just south of Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota. Read the Outdoor News story and check out the video!
Congratulations to Tucker, Daniel & Kaitlyn Chamberlain from Michigan, who were awarded a family digital subscription to Outdoor News through the Outdoor News Foundation in April.
