There's so much going on outside this time of year First off - congrats to all the JPT members who've enjoyed successful spring turkey hunts this season. Make sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook and share YOUR PHOTOS with us!
In this month's newsletter, learn about a trick black bears have learned to get an easy dinner, tips for fishing jerkbaits and using live bait for walleye. Plus make sure you check out who the weekly winners were during the month of April!
While Arbor Day is recognized the end of April, many states have adopted the month of May as Arbor Month, and are encouraging people to plant trees. Did you know that the first Arbor Day celebration was held in Nebraska on April 10, 1872? Prizes were offered to the individuals and counties who planted the most trees. On that day, an estimated 1 million trees were planted across the state.
Trees provide shelter and food for animals. They help keep us healthy by removing carbon from the air. Even fish rely on trees to filter pollutants out of rivers and lakes!

Did you know that wild turkeys thrive in 49 US states? The National Wild Turkey Federation has some interesting information, including tips to help you ID a gobbler from a hen by differences in their size, color, heads and other characteristics. Learn more Know-your-wild-turkey.pdf
You can use DEET to deter ticks and spray hunting boots, shirt, pants, socks and hat with an insect spray containing a product called Permethrin that’s effective against a wide range of ticks, fleas, chiggers and mites. But it is very important to know that Permethrin, is a synthetic insecticide and it cannot be applied directly to your skin or on any animals! Spray your clothing, tent and outdoor gear and let it dry completely before using.
Here are tips for fishing the colder water in spring using a JERKBAIT to replicate a minnow:

Use a stop-and-go retrieve when you fish a jerkbait. Cast out, crank down for three or four turns, then pause for 5 to 12 seconds, reel in the slack line, give the lure another twitch-twitch-pause, wait 5-12 seconds, then repeat.

These baits usually work best in clearer water as deep as 15 feet, and the colder the water the longer the pause between twitches.

In this quick video, “Tackle” Terry Tuma talks about the use of LIVE BAIT SPINNER RIGS for open-water walleyes. Leeches and crawlers often work well as live bait for these rigs, with a variety of designs of blades available on the market. Tuma says flash, color and vibration are the key. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hV1oIJ-6LjQ
