It's that time of year when we we're outdoors as much as possible. June is National Safety Month, and in this month's newsletter, we've got some tips on staying safe, plus a dive into crankbaits, and ideas to prepare for the fall hunting season.
A recent Outdoor News article covered a story about a lady who was injured in a bear encounter in MN. According to the MN DNR's Andrew Tri, bear project leader. “The key things to remember are to not surprise them and to keep food secure.” Andrew offered these additional tips:

When moving about in bear country, people should be aware of their surroundings, make noise periodically so bears know they’re there, and always keep dogs leashed.

To keep human food away from bears, people should keep a clean camp.

  • Store coolers in a locked vehicle or store food in a certified bear-resistant container.
  • Take food waste with them rather than piling it outside on the ground if the trash container or dumpster is full. Leave no trash or food scraps in camp and don’t burn scraps in the fire ring.
  • Not leave food, trash or pet food outdoors and unsupervised — all it takes is a few seconds for a hungry bear to swipe it.

Many JPT members will be spending time on the water over the summer months, so Coach Brody put together some great tips to make your day on the boat gets rolling the right way. Remember that your safety is your responsibility, and as JPT members, we encourage you to take the lead role in helping everyone in your party to stay safe.

The summer months are a great time to improve your skills when it comes to being more accurate during the fall hunting seasons.  In the next video, Coach Brody has: 7 Key Tips for Bow Hunting Accuracy
And click here to learn more about Sporting Clay Courses which is a fantastic way to not only gain accuracy when you are hunting pheasants and waterfowl this season, but may inspire you to join the USA High School Clay Target League.  (Are you already a member of the league? It's never too early to scout food sources that deer frequent to help your odds when hunting season rolls around! During the warmer summer months, it is estimated that wild forbs provide as much as 60% of a deer's diet. Wild forbs — which are non-woody nor grass-like — are broadleaf plants such as milkweed, sunflowers, clovers, and wildflowers, to name a few.
Other good sources of food to keep an eye out for include fruit trees and oak trees. Both of these are also popular with wild turkey, so you may want to journal what you are finding in your hunting area.
